Westralia – Perth Twilight Hawkers Market

Twilight signIn November I visited Perth, capital of Western Australia, to attend a food blogging conference, ‘Eat. Drink. Blog.’ After the conference, we toured for a week, visiting the south-west of WA. As we had arrived in Perth on a Friday afternoon, we were able to visit the Twilight Hawkers Market.

If there’s one thing I enjoy more than visiting a market when I’m on holiday, it’s visiting a market where there’s a selection of bite sized food adventures on offer. The Twilight Hawkers Market has bite sized food adventures in abundance.

Similar to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets in Darwin and Fork on the Road in Adelaide, the Twilight Hawkers Market brings food trucks, caravan and stalls of every persuasion together to feed the lucky people of Perth. Gyoza? Hai! Paella? No hay un problema. Moroccan Beef with Couscous? Wakha. Okonomyaki? Sure, but you need to join the longest queue of the evening.

The plan remains the same no matter where I’m visiting this type of market:

  • Go early to beat the crowds
  • Do a quick circuit (it’s OK to grab a bite as long as you don’t stop to queue and slow down the tour)
  • Make your selections but have a back up if the queue is too big (Okonomyaki)
  • Bring a friend to share with and broaden your options
  • Brings lots of small notes and change

The empanadas from Marcelita’s looked great but I warned my fellow EDB delegates off them as I knew they were on the menu at our conference dinner the next night. We needed to leave space for other bite sized adventures. No doubling up allowed! Stand out of the night was the Venezuelan Arepas which I had never tried before. They are a type of maize flatbread that are cooked on the griddle, split and stuffed with slow cooked beef, cheese and guacamole. Once tried, never forgotten! The Sticky Ribs were also great value and lived up to their name.

There’s quite a lot of seating as well as staff employed to clear the tables so it was easy to grab a seat and polish off our goodies before joining the crowd again.

Located in Forrest Place, off one of the two shopping malls in the Perth CBD, the Twilight Hawkers Market runs from 5 – 9pm every Friday night throughout the Summer.

And the thing is Mary, I'd never heard of them then I went to Melbourne this week and there was a cafe that also had them! (I had two serves…..) Thanks for stopping by.

Did you get to try any okonomiyaki? I tried this several times in Japan and depending on where you were regionally, the taste varied. The best was in the market in Hiroshima, and one of the cheaper dishes offered in a very expensive 'food court'.
Your foray into the hawker's market sounds great!

No okonomyaki. The queue stretched the length of the markets which is no doubt testament to how good it was. There was actually another stall selling a Korean version and their queue was nearly as long. Still, I can get pretty good okonomyaki in a little place in Melbourne for less than 8 bucks. Cheaper than going to Japan!
