Local &/or General is the title of a song by The Models. Not when they were in their chart topping phase but earlier on, in their edgy, urban grit phase, prior to James Freud joining. It’s a song that’s always stuck in my mind and it seemed like an appropriate title for this occasional series of reviews about very local coffee shops that I can walk to from my house.
I’ve really demurred on writing about The Blue Poppy as I don’t want to encourage any more customers but I love a success story and The Blue Poppy in Morningside is nothing if not a success. Located in an old fashioned set of local shops well away from the main road with nothing but a sandwich board to direct traffic to it, it’s become one of the busiest cafes in the area. This success must be put down to good coffee and great service.
Yarn Bomb Central
It’s a very casual affair at The Blue Poppy. The busiest time is on weekends when people arrive with their kids, dogs, newspapers and knitting needles to take up a short residence, enjoy the coffee and soak up the atmosphere. The shop itself is tiny but they’ve taken over the entire footpath and have even started to spread out onto the grassed spaces, with picnic tables and umbrellas.
There’s a simple menu on offer that is bolstered on weekends by the ever popular bacon and egg burger. After paying inside at the counter, you take your chit out to the carpark and hand it over to the person working the outdoor grill. It feels a bit like you’re at a fete buying a Lion’s Club burger but, it works. Full of smoky bacon, egg, avocado if you want it and a dollop of sauce it’s surely the best value bacon and egg burger around.
It very much has a village, almost festive feel to it that is in no way forced. Surprisingly, given the number of patrons, it’s very rare not to be able to jag a seat or table. If necessary, there is room to spread out and sit on the grass.
There’s a lot to like about The Blue Poppy but I don’t want you to like it because I want to keep it all to myself. Therefore, if you would like to venture into Morningside to sample what The Blue Poppy has to offer, you must present yourself to Border Control. You may be issued a temporary 4170 Visa to enter the suburb. Issuing of Visas will be at Border Control’s discretion.
