Hey Sister, Go Sister – Lady Marmalade Cafe

Lady Marmalade Cafe has been around for several years, started by Brisbane My Kitchen Rules competitors Mal and Bec but has since changed hands to Howard and Sonja Searle. It sits in an absolutely tiny triangular shaped shop right on the tip of the Stones Corner shopping area. The building was once, amongst other things, a bird hospital. When you see the size of the kitchen, it’s amazing that Lady Marmalade can turn out toast let alone meals. It is packed to the hilt on weekends with hopeful punters staring you down as you finish your breakfast but it’s a more sedate affair mid-week.

Corn waffles with feta, roasted tomatoes and chimichurri sauce

In my ongoing quest to move beyond egg combos for breakfast, I was delighted to see Corn Waffles w Feta & Roasted Tomatoes on the menu. I could have also selected good old fashioned Savoury Mince on (Sourdough) Toast or an exotic Vegan Okra & Black Eye Pea Gumbo. For the die hards, there are the standard eggs and smashed avo options. The waffles were based on a polenta batter so the final cooked product was extra crunchy. Topped with creamed corn and a homemade chimichurri sauce, there was nary an egg in sight but it made for a large and filling breakfast. As much as I love creamed corn, by its very nature it is tends towards sweetness. The tangy feta and sharp chimichurri cut through some of this sweetness but the corn could still have done with the addition of some more seasoning. This is a minor quibble and did not stop me gobbling up the waffles whilst they were hot and crisp. The coffee of choice is Genovese.

Plating followed the trend for, well, not plating. My meal was served on a Melamine tray. What crime did crockery commit that means it’s now been pushed to the back of the cupboard? To be fair, a Melamine tray is very much in keeping with the Lady Marmalade ethos. From the moment you order and are given your table animal (I had a panda); to the quirky hand knitted Nanna rugs sitting on your chair to guard you from the morning chill; to the arrival of your meal that is probably served nothing like you thought it would be, Lady Marmalade is full of whimsy and fun. Irrepressible to the core.

I like eggs benny too but try to mix it up on occasion. They aren’t on the menu at Lady M so you’ll have to try something different. I think I told you about Give Me Plates ; )

Did you know there is a whole twitter feed dedicated to places not using plates. The corn waffle sounds interesting 😀

Ha ha – yes, I love it. This is fairly tame in comparison to some of the things on that feed! I am desperate for a waffle iron but will see if I can get one second hand at they are very ‘gadgety’ and people tire of them quickly.

I love comments. What are your thoughts?
