NeNe Chicken

I had heard the buzz about NeNe chicken being ‘so good’ and the best Korean Fried Chicken (KFC) around but couldn’t really see a situation where I’d be seeking it out. Cue a Friday night on the tiles and suddenly, NeNe seemed mighty appealing.

NeNe means Yes! Yes! in Korean, which is exactly what we were saying as we crunched (and it was definitely a crunch) into the crisp chicken. The secret to KFC and JFC is a thin batter cooked at a high heat resulting in juicy chicken without a hint of oiliness and a coating that shatters when you bite into it.

The formula is simple:

  • Make your choice from original or a vast array of coatings such as Green Onions, Lemon, Garlic or Freaking Hot
  • Collect your plastic gloves or cutlery, your table number and grab a seat
  • When your chicken is ready, it will be delivered to your table along with a small bucket for your chicken bones

The plastic gloves alone are worth the price of admission. These should be mandatory at any place serving chilli crab and ribs. We enjoyed our Green Onion chicken which came with a side serve of coleslaw and refreshing cup of pickled daikon. The kimchi burger was less successful. There was nothing particularly wrong with the burger but the combination of kim chi, chicken, sauce and roll all combined to create an indistinct flavour. On a lunch time visit (in the same week), I ordered the original chicken and think this is the best way to enjoy NeNe. My friend Shannan also revisited during the week and swears by the sweet and spicy ‘Swicy’. Whilst we can agree to disagree on the flavour, as we had both visited twice in a week, we are on the same page about NeNe’s addictive qualities.

These should be mandatory…

Black Sesame soft serve – fantastic value!

Finish off your meal with a $2 Green Tea or Black Sesame soft serve. Just like Maccas with a Korean accent. NeNe packs the crowds in. Families, teens, couples who may have had one too many happy hour drinks…  It’s a novel dining experience in the comfort of your own backyard. With over 1000 stores in South Korea alone, I can see why people are saying Yes! Yes!

In the words of 2 Unlimited ‘Ne Ne, Ne Ne Ne Ne, Ne Ne Ne Ne, Ne Ne there’s no limit’.

I’m not so sure about wearing gloves while eating. I am sure however I would enjoy the ice cream 😀

It’s funny when you’re sitting in the restaurant and even the burliest of blokes has gloves on. The black sesame ice cream is a bargain.
