I thought my bar hopping days were over. It’s not that I can’t take the liquor. What I can’t take, are the prices. Where are the days of $3 vodka and cheap OJs at White Chairs? It seems that at least some of the crowd I run with are still very much into bars so I’ve been to quite a few in the past while. As part of a continuing series, I’m sharing some of these visits so you too can seem like you’re ‘in the know’ with the young crowd you’re running with.
Name: Mr Henderson
Location: Sandgate
Vibe: Easy going, relaxed, no pretensions. Great for a Sunday session.
Punters: Mid 30’s up. Locals channeling their inner suburban hipster. Parents escaping their kids for the night.
Size: Long and narrow with a decent courtyard out the back where food trucks pull up to feed the weekend crowd. Sometimes they even have pies from the legendary Goat Pie Guy.
Decor: Mr Henderson was the local boot maker for 50 years and ran his shop from here. Light & bright, clean lines, minimalist design, polished concrete & exposed brick. Lush potted greenery to soften things up.
Music: Nothing of note.
Specialises in: Beer (both on tap and by the bottle). A huge range. There’s wine too.
Do Try: Beers of the World including Mythos (Greece), Negra Modelo (Mexico), Moa (NZ), Clare Valley Bullseye (Australia)
Insider Tip: You can BYO food to Mr Henderson so bring along your fave bar snacks or plates to match what you’ll be drinking. Don’t feel limited to a bag of chips as you can even bring takeaway from local restaurants. Don’t be shy!

wow, BYO food- now that’s a first, although the locals channeling their inner suburban hipster would be extremely off putting.
We used to visit another BYO food bar too which was very good. They limited themselves to wine and cider (due to licensing law) so didn’t do well, cutting out the beer market. Sadly they are closed.
That’s an amazing idea to bring your own food. I think my bar hopping days are over if I ever did hop:)
pish posh – everyone says their bar hopping days are over but all you need to do is get a gang on friends together and visit this genteel option.
I’ve never heard of a bring your own food at a bar before. One place we drink at its cheaper to drink a decent whisky than a plain soda.
There’s a few around in Brisbane now. It’s to do with licensing laws. I think it must be cheaper than doing alcohol and food. It feel a bit weird the first time you bring your own plate of cheese but you soon overcome it when you think about the money being saved!
