Every day on my way home from work, I walk along Ann St from the bottom end of the Valley (Newstead really) to the top end of the Valley to catch my bus home. It’s a way of decompressing at the end of the day and getting a short stroll in. I walk along at a brisk pace as the bumper to bumper traffic sits stationary, going nowhere. There are building developments going up all around but not much changes at street level. By the by though, I noticed a new coffee shop on my route – Flux on Ann.
Flux isn’t open in the afternoons when I head home but it is open at the super duper typical Qld time of 6am to get the early birds. I’m not that much of an early bird but once a month I get off the bus on my way to work and head into Flux for a breakfast treat of coffee and Turkish fruit toast and then walk the rest of the way to work. Yep, I’m a rager!
When I worked in the CBD, I used to go over to Aromas every other day for a coffee. They’ve been through some highs and lows but the coffee was always consistent. I was therefore delighted to see that Flux uses Aromas, who are obviously still going strong. Though the draw of the Aromas’ coffee is strong, the call of the Turkish fruit toast is even stronger. This bread is unbelievable. Made by Levain Bakery, these days they don’t have a shop front, only doing wholesale and markets so I go to Flux to get my fix. Packed full of whole figs and apricots with plenty of butter once toasted, this is the reason I only visit once a month and I walk. There are also delicious little Italian treats supplied by Dolci Sapori but the less time we dwell upon those, the better.
My visits were curtailed for a short while when there really was a state of flux, after a burst pipe in the building caused significant water damage meaning a closure and re-fit. They’re open once more and there was the usual friendly hello as I walked in and a quick chat about the near disaster of the burst water pipe. Service is quick and and as the sign says, ‘atitude free’ coffee. There’s never much of a wait so it’s a perfect stop on the way to work. Free wifi too.

I rarely go out for coffee or breakfast since we work from home. I should make a point to go out at least once a week simply for a change of scenery.
One upon a time not too long ago, I loved having a day off so I could try new places but now if I have a day off I must confess to being a homebody. This is a beaut little place and good to see the owners doing what they love.
I'm with Maureen… Peter and I used to go out for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings and now we always stay home. It's a pleasant change of scenery. That toast at your 'desk' looks yum!
We've given up on weekend breakfast too – the last thing I want to do is queue with 50 other people in the hope that when we are seated they remember to serve us. We do sometimes do brekkie on the rare occassion we both have a day off during the week.
I didn't realise that places tended to open so early in Queensland. I'm much more of a late night sort of person so whilst I love breakfast foods, they tend to be eaten in the evening 😛
Probably one of the early starters but as the sun is up well before 5am in summer (closer to 4am) there are plenty of people who start work at 7am. I am not one of them! I'm always surprised when I go to Canberra that nothing is really open before 7.30am
